Corporate Responsibility

Being a great company is about more than just sales and profit margins; it’s also about making a positive impact on society, associates and the planet.

At Staples, we’re committed to being a responsible corporate citizen. Our corporate responsibility programs are an important part of how we do business. We’re dedicated to bringing awareness to and effecting meaningful change in the areas of community engagement, diversity and inclusion, ethics and sustainability.

Making a difference in the communities where our customers and associates live and work is something we care about very much. We promote education and career skills development in countries across the globe through donations, grants, special programs, associate volunteering, and cause marketing campaigns.

2 Million & Change

We’re proud of our associates who every year help us decide where to donate a total of $2 million directly to the more than 1,000 organizations they care about most through our 2 Million & Change program. The initiative allows Staples associates around the world to direct funding to non-profit organizations focused on education or job skills.

Staples Share Fund

Founded and funded by associate and corporate contributions, this program offers relief for associates in need of severe financial assistance due to significant qualifying events such as natural disasters, catastrophic personal events, illness, personal injury or other circumstances beyond their control.

Did you know that nearly half of our US facilities are ENERGY STAR certified? Or that 30 percent of our product sales globally are eco-responsible? Or that we collect and recycle nearly 30 million pounds of technology items for customers each year globally? These are just a few ways we’re making a positive impact on the planet, our customers and our business. Our recognized sustainability leadership, including being named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for 12 straight years, is a testament to the culture that Staples fosters.

Inclusion & Diversity

Staples recognizes the value diversity brings to an organization. That’s why we strive to build a dynamic and talented team of associates across all diversity dimensions –culture, race, gender, sexual orientation and more. By combining a diverse workforce with a culture of inclusion, our hope is that each and every associate will contribute to their full potential. We’re proud to have received a perfect score of 100 percent on the Human Rights Corporate Equality Index for the last five years, along with countless other awards recognizing our diversity and inclusion efforts.

Every Staples’ associate should feel as if they have a voice in the company. We want everyone to feel comfortable speaking up to raise questions and concerns.

Our Code of Conduct ensures our associates know how to act with honesty, fairness and integrity each and every day. In fact, every Staples employee is trained on the code when joining the company.

Our Supplier Code of Conduct holds our supply chain accountable for their actions; we audit nearly half of our Staples Brand product suppliers each year.

Workforce Pledges

The White House Equal Pay Pledge

Staples is keenly aware of the national gender wage gap that exists and is actively pursuing ways to understand where our own gaps exist and how to mitigate them. We are proud signatories of the Equal Pay Pledge. It affirms our commitment and outlines a few of our key efforts to help level the playing field.

The White House Fair Chance Business Pledge

Staples is committed to developing a diverse workforce by providing fair opportunities for all people, including the approximately 70 million Americans who have some form of a criminal record. We are committed to being a responsible corporate citizen and as such, Staples is proud to be a signatory of the Fair Chance Business Pledge.

100% Talent: The Boston Women’s Compact

Staples values all of its female associates, and understands the important role gender equality plays in fostering an inclusive workplace. As a Signatory of the 100% Talent Compact, Staples joins Mayor Walsh in his quest to make Greater Boston the first area in the United States to eliminate the gender-based wage gap by attracting, retaining, and engaging women at all levels in Boston-area corporations.

We reach out to and support the communities in which our customers and associates live and work by creating jobs, making financial contributions, participating in outreach programs and more. Making a difference in the communities where our customers and associates live and work is something we care very much about. We promote education, youth development and community development in countries across the globe — through donations and grants, special programs, and associate and customer volunteering.

We generate business and environmental benefits — for ourselves, our customers and our communities — by leading the way in sustainable business practices.

We help make more sustainable business practices happen. We do this by sourcing and selling more eco-conscious products, improving our offering of recycling and other green services, maximizing our energy efficiency and renewable energy use, and eliminating waste.

Diversity & Inclusion

We seek to develop a workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve all over the world by embracing diversity in all its forms.

At Staples, we believe that differences in age, race, gender, gender identity, nationality, sexual orientation, physical ability, background and thinking style allow us to be more innovative as a company. We’re committed to maintaining a diverse and inclusive culture, from supporting associate resource groups to partnering with diversity suppliers.

A company is only as strong as its commitment to doing right. Because doing right is just as important as doing well. That’s why we approach our business with integrity and make sure that we adhere to our Code of Ethics and Corporate practices in everything we do.

We weren’t the only ones saying a heartfelt thank you to our U.S. associates when they directed $3.2 million of our money toward non-profit organizations they cared most about.
